JATO Dynamics released a car sales report for the first quarter of this year, which covers data from 53 markets around the world. Data show that in the first quarter of 2023, the Tesla Model Y surpassed the Toyota Corolla series with 267,000 units and won the global car sales champion in the first quarter of this year.
Tesla Model Y was the third place in global car sales last year, with annual sales reaching 747,000 units. In the first quarter of this year, the cumulative sales of Tesla Model Y reached 267,000 units, surpassing Toyota RAV4 and Corolla series to win the sales champion. This is also a pure electric vehicle. For the first time, the car topped the global car sales list, which became a milestone breakthrough for new energy vehicles in the world. Tesla Model Y won the championship thanks to Tesla's official price cuts on its models earlier this year.
Among the top five cars sold in the first quarter, except for the Tesla Model Y, all other models came from the Toyota brand. Among them, the cumulative sales volume of Toyota Corolla series was 256,000 units; the global sales volume of Toyota Hilux pickup truck was 215,000 units.
As the sales champion of Chinese brands, BYD failed to make the list. Judging from BYD's official sales data, BYD's best-selling model in the first quarter of this year is the BYD Song family, with a cumulative sales of 143,000 units, which is about 100,000 units away from the champion Tesla Model Y. A gap of 124,000 vehicles.
